Subject: [*] Baker's Dozen 2.1.1 (Solitaire)
Here's the latest version of Baker's Dozen. This is version 2.1.1. It
has some very minor changes from version 2.1. The main difference is
that I added a blurb or two about my upcoming game "Eric's Ultimate
Solitaire" which will be shipping this Fall through Delta Tao Software.
Anyway, Baker's Dozen is a one deck solitaire game. An older version
received 3 mice in MacUser. Version 2.1.1 is much better than the
version that was reviewed though.
Baker's Dozen has some cool features like:
Unlimited Undo
Supports color on color machines
Digitized Sounds
Statistics (yay!)
Double clicking to move cards
(You can still drag cards to move 'em around too)
If you like solitaire games you may want to check out my other games,
Montana, and Forty Thieves.
Baker's Dozen is shareware ($10 US). If you play it then please
register your copy, otherwise why not give it to a friend?

Hewlett-Packard DeskWriter 3.9 Drivers. Installation disk image.
Unlike two recent sumex uploads of the new HP DeskWriter 3.9 drivers,
this file contains a true "disk image" of the HP installer floppy,
created with Apple's DiskCopy 4.2 program. YOU WILL NEED DISKCOPY 4.2
TO USE THIS FILE. The previous uploads to sumex did not work because
the HP Installer script and compressed files must reside on a
precisely formatted and configured 800K floppy, called "Installer 1,"
or the script will not run. DiskCopy 4.2 will use this disk image to
create that floppy.
This file is a binhexed Compact Pro archive.
DeskWriter 3.9 includes more sophisticated support for grayscale
printing (with user-configurable levels of gray), and a
context-sensitive help window. HP provides no detailed list of
changes from the previous 3.1, but it appears that the
enlargement/reduction feature of Print Preview is gone entirely, while
page navigation within Preview has been improved with a pop-up menu of
page numbers.

=======================================================================
This list of frequently asked questions and answers is intended to help
reduce the number of "often asked questions" that make the rounds here
in comp.sys.mac.comm. Since comp.sys.mac.comm is intended as a forum to
discuss telecommunication (and related issues) that are specific to the
Macintosh, most questions about modems, telecommunications in general,
and other non-Macintosh specific communication questions are not listed
here. The proper newsgroup for such questions is usually comp.dcom.modems.
This list is posted periodically (about once a month) to the Usenet

It wasn't just about Bill Gates: there was plenty of footage on Apple

After you mirror your internal drive, You can use a file-diddler like
Bat Filer (info-mac/util/bat-filer-10.hqx) to go through your backup
drive and attach an extension to the copies so you can tell them apart.
It also got a few other features, like being able to trash files after
they're a certain age or have a creator code to a program you don't use
anymore. That should do the trick.

I believe the Apple IIGS video monitor lacks the bandwidth to support the
Centris video. However, the Centris will support a cheap PC clone VGA
monitor. Try the following pin-outs. If you rather buy, stores like CompUSA
carries a ready made adapter.

Of course, any multisync monitor from the PC world will also support the
Centris. Just make sure pin 4 on the Mac video connector is tied to GND. By
the way, the standard 640x480 resolution specs are:
Horizontal rate: 35.0 KHz
Vertical rate: 66.7 Hz
If your multisync monitor can handle higher resolutions, the standard
Centris can also support 832x624, 640x870, and 1152x870 pixels resolutions
but with less colors.

I heard by way of MacWeek that August is the magic month for the
Cyclones. Officially they will be called the Centris 620v and the
Quadra 810v (or some such; the old memory is a starting to go).
The Centris will be in the Centris 610 form factor and will supposedly
start at around $2300. The Quadra will be in the Quadra 800 form
factor and is supposed to go for over $4000.
As fas as PowerPC upgrades, I have heard that the C610, C650 and
Q800 form factors will have upgrade pathes.

You can fit a minimal System 6.0.8 on an 800K diskette (including
the System 7 LaserWriter driver that comes with it) but you won't have
any room for Desk Accessories or other goodies (In fact, strip out all
your DAs except for Control Panel and the Chooser) Get a teeny screen
saver like AutoIdle, which only takes up 4K. As long as you don't mind
working with only a few bitmap fonts and no DAs, using a System like this
can actually work. And, if you use a finder-substitute, you may be able
to add more resources (Sumex has a few, as does oak.oakland.edu, a mirror
of the old SIMTEL stuff).

Subject: Help needed in Postscript (Q)
Since the LaserWriter 8.0 driver and LaserWriter Utility 1.4.1 still do not
address the problem of setting a default for the paper feed, I still have a
problem printing letters from OzTeX, where the first page should be on
letterhead from the multipurpose feeder, and the balance should be on plain
white paper from the 250-sheet tray.
The author of OzTeX suggested that I write PostScript code to persuade the
printer to do this, and append this code to the DVItoPS.ps file that OzTeX
sends down at the beginning of each print job.
Unfortunately, I am Postscript-illiterate. Could any kind soul out there
please give me some help in producing an appropriate chunk of Postscript
code which will impose the following logic on paper selection:
IF (paper present in multipurpose feeder) THEN
print first page using multipurpose feeder
ELSE
print first page using 250-page tray
END;
print balance of job using 250-page tray
I tried setting the appropriate options up in a text editor, printing to
disk, editing most of the stuff that seemed inappropriate out, then adding
what was left to the end of DVItoPS.ps. Bingo! the first page printed from
the multipurpose feeder. Unfortunately, the printer wanted everything else
>From the same source (manual feed error, or some such, was the helpful
diagnostic message).
If I ever get the Postscript code to do the job, I'll submit it to the
archive, and post a copy to the OzTeX archive at midway.uchicago.edu as
well.
Don't let the above put people off the idea of using OzTeX. It's superb, and
with a set of fonts built at 600 dpi, on a 600 dpi printer, the output is
indistinguishable from typeset (well, OK, with a suitably high-powered
magnifier you can see a *slight* step in some of the serifs).
I await the responses, including the ones that run `You cretin: why don't
you use Word like the rest of the Universe?' (I have an answer to that one,
and it won't please Mr Bill :-) ).

You can strip a 6.0.5 system down to basics, put on an 800k, connect
to the appleshare servers with it, and use Initshare or probably
carpetbag to get to a folder on the server for fonts BUT you can't
fit an up-to-date printer driver on the 800k disk, and if you don't
have the same one everyone else has, the printer keeps reinitializing
and is a pain for all and sundry. You could, however, use the mac as
a terminal server with, say, tn3270 on the appleshare volume.
You can also use it with an older version of a word processor; the
new ones tend to take up too much ram to be very useful on a 1 M machine.
But again, you can't print from it unless everyone is running a very
old version of the printer drivers.
I've forgotten, though, if 6.0.8 will really require you to have
more memory than 1 M. I think it does. And it's bigger.

Subject: MacTCP over AppleTalk Remote Access
Tried to send this direct to leigh@alexandria.com, but my mailer says,
'unknown host'. This might help others though. I do not have the
time, but this question is asked often enough to warrant a report.
Whomever wants to do this can copy this post verbatim. Of course,
fix any errors. ;-)
ARA only will pass AppleTalk packets. This poses a slight problem
for MacTCP which on LocalTalk passes TCP/IP packets encapsulated in
AppleTalk and on ethernet passes raw TCP/IP packets. Notice the
what MacTCP does on LocalTalk. It encapsulates TCP/IP packets
within AppleTalk packets, and that is how you can get TCP/IP
services over a ARA connection.
PROBLEM: You need something on the host network to take the TCP/IP
packets out of the ARA packets. This something is called a DDP/IP
gateway and is a feature of many LocalTalk to Ethernet routers
(GatorBox, FastPath, . . . etc.).
A DDP/IP gateway is recognized by the Mac by it's zone name. I have
a zone here called 'UF Brain Institute', and it is maintained by my
GatorBox.
ARA HOST CONFIGURATION:
* See whole network (a must because the remote Mac must 'see' the
DDP/IP gateway)
MISC HOST CONFIGURATION:
* Network Control panel set so that the host can 'see' the DDP/IP
gateway
* NOTE: The host MacTCP setting is IRRELEVANT!
ARA MacTCP CONFIGURATION:
* You must connect with ARA to configure
* Choose 'EtherTalk' (I think this is a bug) in the first screen
* Select your DDP/IP gateway out of the pop-up list under the
EtherTalk icon
* Goto the 'More...' screen
* MUST be server mode, all other settings should match the
TCP/IP settings on the DDP/IP gateway, not the host Mac (this can, and
often are the same though)
* Close MacTCP, restart
Next time you connect with ARA your TCP/IP programs should work.
hope this helps

Subject: MacWrite Pro (Q) footnotes won't print!
I was impressed with the creation of footnotes in MacWrite Pro. Just
"Insert Footnote" at a location in the text, and you are placed at the
bottom of the page below a rule (straight line) in a smaller font size.
Footnotes are renumbered automatically if you add additional notes or
move text. They appear at the bottom of the page in all MacWrite views.
But they don't print! I'm using TrueType fonts on an ImageWriter II.
The footnotes are in small font size, but not too small for the printer
to handle--the subscript calls in the text are smaller, and they print
fine. After much panic and aggravation, I noticed the "Print Notes"
choice on the Print Dialog, but it does nothing--it seems to refer to
another MacWrite feature: Notes, or comments which ordinarily are not
printed.
I am new to the Mac and new to MacWrite. Can any kind soul tell me
what I'm doing wrong?

The responses were quite varied.
Jim Vance (JVANCE@DESIRE.WRIGHT.EDU) said he'd experienced it many times

Richard Austin (austin@eecs.umich.edu) said he's seen it on a Mac IIfx.
ptw@RIVERSIDE.SCRC.Symbolics.COM reminded me that folder preferences

I also have a gripe about the MacGS package. Both parts are TOO DAMN BIG.
The distribution needs to be re-packaged in a multi-part SEA (Compact Pro
and StuffIt can both do these) which each segment binhexed separately to
cut down on the hacking apart and concatenation of the files. Since my
Mac isn't directly connected to the net and I don't trust my campus phone

SneakerNet enclosed in high-density diskettes (primitive, yes, but unless
they want to run Ethernet into my home...). and even in MacBinary form,
the first chunk of MacGS just won't fit on a 1.4MB disk.

On the Macintosh, the DRM-604X appears as 6 cd drives and automatically
mounts all of the available disks upon bootup. The only problem is when
the Mac goes out and looks for an unknown file creator or other info
and mounts each disk in succession to find the info.
Each 'virtual drive' is a lun so that the 6 drives only use 1 scsi id.

The first thing you have to consider is, has Your Mac been opened recently?
If so, this may be your answer! The floppy drive is connected to the
mainboard by
a flat ribbon cable. This cable fits into a connector on the floppdrive.
Now, if somebody
opens the Mac to do almost anything, they will almost inevitably pull this
cable slightly
loose from the drive. What happens then is that the signals telling the Mac
that there is or
isn't a disk in the drive gets fouled up. Result: the disk stubbornly tries
to format a
disk that is not there!
Try opening your MAc and gently pushivng the connector all the way into the
socket
on the floppy.
If this does not work, try a new cable. If this does not work, the cheapest
replacement
is probably a replacement unit from Apple; their spareprices are not that
horrible
right now, at least in Denmark.

Your solution is to get another formatting program. You might try FWB

Two things are worth noting about toner cartridges:
1) They do deteriorate with use
2) They do not lend themselves to easy (or clean!) disassembly.
If you have already refilled the toner several times, you should probably
regard it as used up! If you insist on trying to take it apart, at least do
yourself a favor and do it outside your home!
Have fun!

First, good question. Second, this question can generate tons of replies
and opinions so I'll try to summarize what I remember from the last
discussion.
The consesus was that if you plan to not use your computer for around 4
hours, shut it down. So when you go home at night, turn it off. If you are
getting a drink of water, leave it on. The trigger time (4 hours) is
arbitrary but in general, if you don't plan on using it for quite a while,
turn it off.
Just my opinion,

Ummm, although I'm no fan of the Amiga, this assumption is not
quite the problem as suggested. Both the Amiga and Atari Macintosh Plus
emulators, the Amax and the Spectre GCR, address this situation easily.
They have "floppy insert" detect microswitches in their floppy mechanisms.
When a user inserts a disk, then the standard Mac floppy format/erase
option dialog is presented. No fuss, no muss.
What about ejects? Both the Amax and the Spectre GCR use flashing
letters or symbols in the menu bar to alert the user to remove the
floppy. This all works rather well. I used the Spectre GCR for
YEARS until Macs became affordable. The flashing letter/symbol method
was rather intuitive and the letter/symbol disappeared when the disk was
removed. What do you want to bet that Apple will use some ugly dialog box
that covers half the screen, though? grin
Finally, the "CrippleDrive", from what has been presented, is mainly
for low-end consumer models. As such, these mechanisms are about half
the cost of a motor assisted unit.

I have been using a very reliable fast Maxtor 345 MB hardddisk for 2.5 years
without any problems. When I switched to a Centris 650 last week my troubles
started:
The disk would be mounted only occasionally.
Frequently the machine hangs when trying to mount the disk.
If it mounts successfully it hangs later on during a transfer.
The problems immediately go away if I turn off the processor's caches.
The problems do not occur on a Q950 (running A/UX 3.0).
I have tried:
reformatting, 4 different disk drivers (including Apple's A/UX 3.0 HD SC
setup),
yes - it also happens with a clean system (no non-Apple inits), 24 hour disk
read/write test.
The precise designation of the disk is XT8380S.
This prblem is really wierd, the other external peripherals I use work Ok.
